Winter preparations for your water fountains and features

The frosty mornings are here so now is a good time to prepare your fountain for the winter. The first thing to do is clean it out, this includes the pump see out page on care and maintenance for help with this. If you don't clean it now any algae or fallen leaves will rot over the winter creating a black smelly sludge to greet you in the spring.

If you want to keep your fountain running as long as possible then refill with clean water, it will then be a simple matter to just drain it when its gets colder and the water starts to freeze.

We recommend draining the water out over the coldest part of the winter because if the water in your fountain bowls is allowed to freeze solid it can as it expands cause damage to the pump and bowls.

The stone from which the fountains are made is frost proof so can be left through the coldest of winters however you should undo the cable gland and remove plastic pipes so that rain water will drain out.
If a heavy snowfall is expected its wise to cover the fountain as compacted snow that is repeatedly re frozen can have the same affect as leaving the water in.

Thank you for your support throughout 2012, we will continue to update new products over the winter, we look forward to the spring in 2013
